Viti Levu

Fiji

Just an 11-hour direct flight from the US West Coast, 10 hours from major Asian cities, and a mere 3 to 4 hours from Australia and New Zealand, Fiji offers an accessible yet otherworldly escape. Unlike more tourism-centric destinations such as Tahiti or the Maldives, Fiji presents a unique blend of adventure, wellness, luxury, family-friendly activities, romance, and an unparalleled retreat from the daily grind.

This South Pacific gem caters to every type of traveler, infusing happiness into every experience. The key to fully appreciating Fiji lies in respecting its rich culture and embracing the warm Fijian hospitality. You'll find yourself greeted with cheerful "Bulas" at every turn, instantly immersing you in the friendly local atmosphere.

For surf enthusiasts, Fiji is home to the legendary "Cloudbreak" - a world-renowned wave that doesn't break by the shore but crests dramatically in the middle of the ocean. Whether you're brave enough to tackle it yourself or prefer to watch from the safety of a boat, like me, it's a thrilling spectacle not to be missed.

Fiji's appeal extends beyond its natural beauty, though it's crystal waters, sea-life, lush tropical plants and waterfalls are truly breathtaking. You'll find yourself surrounded by visitors from Australia and New Zealand, adding to the laid-back, regional vibe.

To maximize your journey, consider combining Fiji with a week in Australia or New Zealand. This combination allows you to experience the best of both worlds - the vibrant cities of the Pacific and the tranquil island paradise of Fiji.

From its crystal-clear waters perfect for snorkeling and diving to its lush landscapes and welcoming people, Fiji leaves an indelible mark on all who visit. It's a place that not only meets expectations but exceeds them, leaving you with a profound appreciation for its unique charm and a desire to return. Before you book this trip you have to be ok with embracing "Fiji Time," where relaxation is paramount and worries dissolve under the tropical sun. Whether you're seeking adventure, family fun, romantic seclusion, or simply a place to recharge, Fiji offers an escape like no other.

For the best weather, plan your visit between May and October, when you'll enjoy dry, sunny days and comfortable temperatures. This period also avoids the cyclone season, which typically runs from November to April. Though we visited the first week of April and experienced 5 sunny days with perfect temperatures and low humidity. Out timing was a bit of a gamble but it certainly paid off.

The Hotel

Marriott Momi Bay

My daughter cried when we told her it was time to leave for the airport and return home. She fell in love with the warmth of Fijian hospitality at Momi Bay Marriott Hotel, where friendly staff greet you with a cheerful "Bula!" at every turn. Nestled on acres of lush tropical landscape, this gated and secluded resort offers a tranquil escape just about 45 minutes from the airport. Families will love the excellent kids club, keeping little ones entertained while parents unwind at the adults only pool. Choose from three tantalizing restaurants (all seated by the water), or indulge in a pampering session at the serene spa. I had my first four hand massage here and it was an experience worth repeating. With direct beach access and a variety of water sports available, there is plenty to do but doing nothing is just as nice too. My kids didn't want to leave the family pool. Whether you're seeking relaxation or excitement, Momi Bay Marriott Hotel provides the perfect blend of luxury and authentic Fijian charm for an unforgettable tropical island vacation.

The Food

Fish Bar

Fish Bar at Momi Bay Marriott is a destination in itself, worth visiting even if you're not a hotel guest. We weren't sure if it was going to be worth the hype but after visiting for dinner we immediately booked a second night. This vibrant restaurant offers an unparalleled Fijian dining experience that shouldn't be missed.

Watching the sunset here is an absolute must - the panoramic views are simply breathtaking. While evenings are magical, the bar area buzzes with energy throughout the day, creating a lively atmosphere for afternoon drinks.

The menu doesn't disappoint, featuring delicious dishes that you don't see on every menu and certainly complemented the stunning setting. What truly sets Fish Bar apart, however, is the staff. Warm, attentive, and friendly, they enhance the overall experience with their genuine Fijian hospitality.

Whether you come for the food, the drinks, or the views, Fish Bar delivers on all fronts. It's a perfect spot to create lasting memories and beautiful photos of your time in Fiji.

Recreation

Pool, Spa, Water Sports

Momi Bay Marriott Hotel in Fiji offers an impressive array of pool, spa, and water sports options to suit every guest's preferences.

The family-friendly area features a spacious main pool complemented by a separate baby pool, both conveniently located next to the beach. Here, you can enjoy refreshments at the swim-up bar without leaving the cool water.

On the opposite end of the property, an adults-only infinity pool awaits, complete with stunning horizon views and private cabanas that are in high demand. Surprisingly, this area tends to be busier than the family pool, offering a lively yet sophisticated atmosphere that is clearly very desirable.

The spa, while situated on the far side of the property from the adults-only pool, is easily accessible thanks to the friendly staff who provide golf cart transportation. A leisurely 10-minute walk is also an option. The spa menu is comprehensive, offering a wide range of treatments. I exeperienced  my first four-hand massage which I thought might feel a bit odd but turned out to be an unforgettable experience worth repeating.

For those seeking more activity, water sports equipment, including jet skis, is available on the beach behind the spa. However, with the allure of the pools and spa, you might find yourself, like me and many other guests, content to simply relax and unwind in these tranquil settings.

Whether you're looking for family fun, adult relaxation, pampering spa treatments, or water adventures, Momi Bay Fiji caters to all preferences, ensuring a memorable stay.

Off-property Activities
Mananuca Islands & Cloud 9

The Mamanuca Islands and Cloud 9 truly stand out as the crown jewels of our Fijian adventure. Our day trip to these outer islands, chartered from the hotel's water sports desk, was undoubtedly the highlight of our entire stay.

Our journey began with a stop at the famous island where "Cast Away" was filmed. Hiking through this iconic location, we felt like we were walking in Tom Hanks' footsteps. Our knowledgeable guides added depth to the experience, demonstrating traditional fishing techniques and treating us to fresh coconut.

The snorkeling experience was nothing short of extraordinary. Swimming in the middle of the ocean, we encountered fascinating sea snakes and even had a thrilling (if slightly too close for comfort) shark encounter.

But the more people friendly part of our excursion was Cloud 9 - a floating bar that defies imagination. This two-story party platform sits in the middle of the ocean, surrounded by 360 degrees of endless horizon. It's a surreal and exhilarating experience to step off your boat onto this lively dock. Visitors dive into the crystal-clear waters, dance on both levels, and revel in the unique atmosphere. Even as a brief stop, Cloud 9 leaves an indelible impression though I think I would have enjoyed this the most in my 20s and early 30s. It appeared the majority of the people soaking up the sun the day were were there were from New Zeland and Australia

This outer island tour offers a perfect blend of adventure, natural beauty, and unforgettable experiences. From movie locations to underwater wonders and a floating party in the middle of nowhere, it's an absolute must-do for anyone visiting Fiji. The memories of this day will undoubtedly stay with you long after you've left these paradise
